fifty pounds gin – rare & handcrafted

After the Gin Act 1736 a family of independent London Distillers came up with an original gin recipe, known ironically amongst themselves as ‘Fifty Pounds’ in honour of the Gin Act levy, which was characterised by its particular smoothness and flavour. The recipe remained hidden for generations, until the descendants of those pioneering master distillers rescued it from oblivion and re-discovered its extraordinary qualities. The specialist traditional methods employed in the creation of this superior gin means that production is limited, obtaining approximately one thousand bottles from each batch. Each bottle of Fifty Pounds Gin is presented in an exclusive bottle, with a design inspired by the first gin bottles, known as case gin. Each bottle bears the individual distillation batch number, together with the year that it was distilled.

Dana Tanamachi is a graphic designer and custom chalk letterer who hails from the Lone Star State, but currently resides in Brooklyn, New York. After graduating in 2007 with a BFA in Communication Design from The University of North Texas, Dana moved to New York City to design Broadway show posters at Spotco—a leader in arts and live entertainment branding. In early 2010, she took a job working under Louise Fili at Louise Fili Ltd, specializing in the design of restaurants and food packaging. Currently, Dana works full time as a custom chalk letterer and has been commissioned by clients such as West Elm, Rugby Ralph Lauren, Google, The Ace Hotel, Adidas, EveryDay with Rachael Ray, Lululemon Athletica, and Garden & Gun Magazine.

This is the Bees Knees! This Honey packaging for Klein Constantia Farm is elegant, yet playful. “The small white box resembles a bee have box with embossed ridges to denote planks of wood & nails. The famous Klein Constantia crest is gold foiled on the front of the box below the diecut slit that has one bee on its way into the box inviting you to open the packaging. The box opens to reveal a, bee covered, honey comb pattern as well as small diecut bees packaged inside each box. all the bees were also detailed with gold foiling. ”

the pima air + space museum (PIMA) is hosting ‘art from the boneyard’, a project curated by eric firestone, carlo mccormick, leslie oliver and med sobio featuring several non-functioning WWII american military airplanes covered in the painted work of contemporary artists. in ‘art from the boneyard: return trip’, how & nosm, retna, andrew shoultz, faile, and nunca, among other creatives, journeyed to a ‘bone yard’, a large resting space for planes in disuse, in order to complete the five massive mural paintings on the bodies of retired aircrafts. the tradition of using the massive surface of a plane as a canvas has been a tradition in the united states air force for generations. ‘nose art’ became a popular form of graffiti painting in the WWII era as soldiers decorated the fronts of the planes which would carry them into battle. ‘the boneyard project: return trip’ is the second installation of the series in which the artists created a semi-sculptural, painted expression of his/her associations with the history of air travel and warfare.

Originally, cocktail bitters were the ingredient that distinguished cocktails from other categories of beverages such as Toddies, Slings, Fizzes, Sours or Punches. For decades, they were an essential component of good cocktail creations. The start of prohibition curtailed consumers’ drinking habits and cocktail bitters almost sank into oblivion. Only a few brands survived that period, but even after that, not all of them managed to reestablish themselves in the new market. Angostura Bitters alone held their ground. For some time now, there has been a resurgence in the popularity of cocktail bitters on an international level. ‘written portraits’ is a series of books which shows the different faces, literally, behind the selected autobiographies of anne frank,vincent van gogh, louis van gaal and kader abdolah. the campaign, created by dutch agency van wanten etctera, was conceived by markus ravenhorst and maarten reynen as part of dutch book week under the theme of (auto) biography. the artwork was executed by souverein whereby, each book was created to stand as a realistic 3D portrait of its author. the structure of the original book’s pages were used for the text within the portraits in order to achieve the right configuration for each.
