The exclusive M9-P Edition Hermès and the M9-P Edition Hermès – Série Limitée Jean-Louis Dumas incorporate Veau Swift calfskin leather in ocre, supplied by Hermès for the leathering of the silver-chromed version of the Leica M9-P camera as well as the shoulder strap included in the set.

A beautiful collaboration in a celebration of the friendship and collaboration between Jean-Louis Dumas, the former president of Hermès, who died in May 2010, and Leica Camera AG. The set comes with three lenses, an exclusive hand-finished Hermès camera bag, the first Leica camera bag ever to have been created by Hermès, as well as a portfolio of 200 black-and-white images all captured by Jean-Louis Dumas with his Leica M camera. Watch the making of the camera, the packaging and the bag below.

Etica lamp is an artistic and high experimentation object, produced by italian lighting manufacturer Ilide, born from an attempt to overstep the limits of the material itself. A fine blown glass veil which hedges in a heart of ultrafine porcelain that is translucent and able to change its appearance.

Etica’s heart is made of two ultrathin hand-refined ceramics layers. During its processing, colored glazes are applied between these two layers, designed to remain trapped in the object material. When the lamp is turned off it shows its white and clean nature, but while it is passed through by the light it reveals the lightness and the color which contains.

Marc Johns – Serious Drawings

Marc Johns creates whimsical drawings filled with dry wit and humour. Whether it’s a man with branches growing out of his head that need pruning, or a pipe that’s trying to quit smoking, his characters are simply, sparsely drawn, yet speak volumes with just a few strokes of the pen. He’s been drawing since he was tiny. He’s not tiny anymore, but he’s not exactly big either. Marc is not sure why he’s talking about himself in the third person…
I generally aim to say as much as possible with as few elements as possible. My work often leans toward humour. Finding the humour in things often leads to finding the truth. I like to create absurd situations, by combining things together that don’t belong, or imagine what inanimate objects would say if they could speak. For instance, the pen I am using to write this draft would probably say: “I’m tired. Can we stop for a bit?” Or perhaps it would say: “I can’t believe you’re making me write this. This is rubbish. Signing cheques would be more inspiring than this.” These are the things I think about. I think about a lot of things. I think about thinking. Don’t try it though, it’s not worth it.

Canadian visual artist Kristi Malakoff’s series titled Money Pieces utilizes the spectrum of hues that is present in paper money from around the world to produce her eye-catching sculptures.
By folding, cutting, and pasting, Malakoff manages to create colorful sculptural pieces.

From the American dollar to the Turkish lira, the artist manipulates numerous copies of each to assemble her intricate works. The result of her meticulous efforts are beautifully multicolored renditions of flowers, diorama-like scenes, and three-dimensional polygons. Many of her works appear to be heavily inspired by floral arrangements and geometric shapes.

Norwich boasts an impressive array of independent delis, cafés and coffeehouses. It’s a thriving, enthusiastic community of chefs, bakers, baristas and small business owners dedicated to serving those who take their daily sustenance a little more seriously than a quick trip to Tesco.

We were very pleased to be asked by Steven Winter, founder of Union Yard, to create a new brand identity, signage and packaging for the latest addition to Norwich’s independent café scene. In a sea of mock-Italian coffeehouse chains, Union Yard brings a touch of variety to early morning commuters and those in search of food throughout the day, with specially selected loose-leaf teas, premium coffee and locally sourced produce. An impressive array of baked goods are on offer courtesy of Dozen, a local artisan bakery and client of The Click.

The brand
The inspiration at the heart of the Union Yard brand is the ubiquitous card coffee cup. It’s difficult to make it into work in the morning without spotting tens of corrugated containers clutched in besuited hands, usually alongside a Smartphone or copy of the morning newspaper. For the logo, the initial of Union Yard becomes one such steaming receptacle, used to contain any number of hot beverages. Although the Union Yard wordmark features the logo and takes precedent on signage and across many printed applications, the ‘U’ logo functions in isolation, providing the flexibility to extend the brand across diverse products.

The font used for the Union Yard identity is Bebas, chosen for its thick, condensed lettering reminiscent of early 20th century typography. Bebas works well with the proportions of the brand name, fits into the various required applications and creates a bold wordmark suitable for signage.

The Café
Union Yard is located on the corner of a busy junction at the heart of the Norwich business district, close to the main offices of Aviva. With competition from other cafés located nearby, we wanted to ensure Union Yard maintained a strong presence on the high street. Bold, monochrome signage adorns the front of the store, ensuring clear exterior branding. Inside, menu boards inform customers of prices and daily specials.

The print
The Union Yard wordmark and logo is applied to the vast majority of products sold in the café via a simple and cost effective rubber stamp. This covers branded card sleeves for takeaway cups and bags of loose-leaf teas. The ‘U’ logo is used on brown paper bags, tea bags and price tags for the wealth of pastries on sale.

If you find yourself in Norwich, you can pay Union Yard a visit at 5a St. Stephens Street to grab a cup of something hot. To find out what they have on offer day-to-day, follow @unionyard on Twitter.

Comics consist of a sequence of images (strip) that tell a story. In cartoons, the narrative point is condensed into one image. The Slanted issue # 17 – Cartoon / Comic is packed cover to cover full of naratives and typographic explosion!
Along with the New Year, the first Slanted issue of 2012 has a new face. A new oversized format, 16 more pages, and a more tightening sequence in content and layout to create more space for projects and activities. Ken Johnston of Corbis (New York) dipped into the archives and retrieved a grotesque photo story of the atomic bomb experiments in a patriotically charged world brought to light – Doom Town, a dark comic, the best stories are real life experiences.
Patrick Tsai (Tokyo) leads a photographic diary – Talking Barnacles, is a story in image sequences combined with very personal lyrics. We are pleased to present a number of readable essays and reports: Motorscream Landscapes – Über die Schrift in der grafischen Literatur by Alexander Negrelli (Berlin), Geliebt und gehasst: Comic Sans by Rieke C. Harmsen (Munich), Manga & Graphic Design, Hands On und Where The Wild Things Were by Ian Lynam (Tokyo), PAT! BON! DOKAAAN! – Schriftgewitter und Lautmalerei in asiatischen Bildgeschichten by Steffen Zillig and Sohyun Jung (Hamburg), Something like Max & Moritz – Vom Erfinder des Comic by Tim Eckhorst (Kiel), A very subjective and casual comics overview from Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY 11222 by Paul Hoppe (Brooklyn NY), Survival is possible by Michael Schmidt (Munich) and Sans Comique by Frank Wiedemann (Berlin).
Furthermore, interviews with Nora Krug (Brooklyn NY), Dirk Rehm (Berlin), Alessio Leonardi (Berlin), Fred Smijers (Antwerp) and Matthew Carter (Cambridge) with insights into their living and working environments. Also the appearance of the new magazine is marked throughout the comic book world. The eight-page fold-out cover glows in red and green on the outside, while the inside are comments of readers from our blog www.slanted.de, which were posted online last November.
